IKO LEVEL 3 – INDEPENDENT
From Rider to Captain: Mastering Total Self-Sufficiency
You can ride. You can turn. You can stop. But can you do it all without anyone else’s help? Level 3 is where we cut the cord and turn you into a completely independent kitesurfer, ready to take on the open water with total confidence.
Location: Masters Surf School, Hurghada – Red Sea
Overview
Congratulations! Completing Level 2 means you have officially joined the global community of kitesurfers who can ride up and down the coast. But true freedom on the water doesn’t come from just riding – it comes from being 100% self-reliant.
IKO Level 3 – Independent is the defining moment of your kitesurfing journey. This is where we transition you from a student who needs assistance to a fully autonomous rider. You will learn advanced board control to master your speed, crack the code of riding upwind (so you never have to walk back to your spot again), launch your kite entirely by yourself, and perform a full self-rescue in deep, open water.
By the end of this level, you will be an independent rider capable of kiting safely at any spot around the world without relying on an assistant or instructor.
Why Hurghada is the Ultimate Playground for Level 3
To become independent, you need challenging yet safe conditions – and Hurghada delivers perfectly.
- Deep Water Practice Zones: Our lagoon offers designated deep-water areas where you can safely practice self-rescue and deep-water pack-down techniques without the risk of waves.
- Consistent Side-Shore Winds: The steady thermal winds are ideal for learning upwind riding. You can practice for hours without the wind suddenly dying or shifting.
- Spacious Riding Area: With miles of flat water, you have plenty of room to practice edging, upwind tacks, and self-launch without worrying about obstacles or other riders.
- Warm Water Conditions: Practicing self-rescue and deep-water pack-down is comfortable and enjoyable in the warm Red Sea, allowing you to focus on the technique rather than fighting the cold.
What is IKO Level 3 – Independent?
This course is designed for intermediate riders who have completed IKO Level 2 and can consistently water-start, ride in both directions, and perform controlled stops.
We break down this advanced-independent level into 4 core mastery skills, exactly as per the official IKO certification:
H – Control of Speed by Edging
Using your board like a throttle and a brake.
Riding in a straight line is easy. Controlling your speed precisely in changing wind conditions – that is the mark of a skilled rider. Edging is the technique of using the rail (edge) of your board to dig into the water, transforming the kite’s pull into either explosive speed or controlled drag.
- The Power Edge (Speed Generation): Learn to flatten your board slightly and lean back, allowing the kite’s pull to accelerate you rapidly across the water.
- The Braking Edge (Speed Scrubbing): Dig your heels in deep, push the board’s rail firmly into the water, and feel the resistance slow you down. This is how you manage overpowered situations.
- Fine-Tuning: We teach you how to make micro-adjustments to your edge angle, allowing you to match your speed perfectly to the wind strength, wave conditions, and your comfort level.
- Body Position Mastery: Understand how shifting your hips and shoulders changes the board’s angle and directly affects your speed – putting you in total command.
I – Ride Upwind (Upwing)
The Holy Grail of Kitesurfing – you never have to walk back!
This is the skill every kitesurfer dreams of. Riding upwind means you can travel against the wind, returning to your exact starting point on the beach. Once you master this, you are completely free to explore the coastline without fear of drifting downwind.
- The Upwind Angle: Learn the precise board angle (approximately 30-45 degrees into the wind) required to generate lift and travel upwind.
- Kite Positioning: We teach you to fly the kite higher in the wind window (at 11 or 1 o’clock) while maintaining steady power – the secret to upwind progression.
- Weight Distribution: Shift your weight onto your front foot and push your hips forward to allow the board’s fins to grip the water and track upwind.
- Practice Drills: We use marker buoys in the water to give you visual targets. You will practice riding upwind to a buoy, turning, and riding back – turning the lagoon into your personal racecourse.
- Result: By the end of this module, you will ride upwind consistently, meaning you can start your session from the beach and return to the exact same spot every time.
J – Self Launch
Becoming fully independent – launching without an assistant.
Until now, you have always had an instructor or friend to hold your kite during launch. In Level 3, we teach you how to launch entirely by yourself. This skill is essential for traveling kitesurfers who visit remote spots or want to ride early in the morning when no one else is around.
- The “Flip” Method: Learn the safest and most widely used technique – positioning your kite on its trailing edge, weighting it with sand, walking your lines out, and flipping it over to launch using a secondary safety line.
- Beach Assessment: Understand how to choose the perfect launch spot, accounting for wind direction, obstacles, and the tide line.
- Safety Protocols: We drill the emergency stop procedure specific to self-launch, ensuring you know exactly what to do if something goes wrong during the process.
- Hands-On Practice: Under our close supervision, you will perform multiple self-launches until it becomes a smooth, routine, and stress-free process.
K – Self Rescue and Pack Down in Deep Water
The ultimate safety net – surviving any equipment failure offshore.
You know how to self-rescue from Level 1, but that was in shallow water where you could stand up. Now, we take you to deep water where the bottom is out of reach. This is the most critical safety skill for any independent rider.
- Deep-Water Assessment: Learn how to evaluate your situation – tangled lines, broken kite, or simply being too tired to continue – and make the right decision.
- Flagging the Kite: Master the technique of fully depowering your kite in deep water and using it as a floating anchor to keep you stable.
- Line Wrapping: We teach you how to wrap your lines around the bar safely and quickly while treading water, preventing tangles that could drag you under.
- Pack Down in Deep Water: The ultimate drill – deflating your kite’s leading edge while floating, rolling it up tightly, and securing it to your harness so you can swim or signal for assistance.
- Board Recovery: Learn to secure your board to your harness or under your arm so you can manage all your gear with one hand while swimming.
