What is IKO Level 1: Discover Kiteboarding?

This is your foundation. Under the guidance of our certified IKO instructors, you will move from a complete novice to a confident kite handler who is ready to get in the water.

We break this beginner level down into three easy-to-digest stages:

1-A: Flying the Trainer Kite

Before you touch a big kite, you must master the wind.

This is where your muscle memory begins. You’ll start on the beach with a small, agile trainer kite. This is the safest and fastest way to understand the physics of kiting.

  • Understanding the Wind Window: Learn where the kite flies, where the power is, and where the “dead zones” are.
  • The Setup: How to lay out lines and inflate your kite (under supervision).
  • Basic Control: Master take-offs, landings, and steering with precision.
  • Safety First: We drill the safety systems until they become second nature.

1-B: Handling the 4-Line Kite

Time to feel the power.

Once you’ve mastered the trainer, it’s time to step up to the full-size inflatable kite. This stage bridges the gap between a toy and a piece of sports equipment.

  • Full-Size Setup: Learn to rig a 4-line kite correctly.
  • Pre-flight Checks: Our meticulous “pre-flight checklist” ensures safety every time.
  • Assisted Launches & Landings: We guide you through the process of getting the kite in the air and back down safely with an assistant.
  • Exploring the Power Zone: You’ll fly the kite on the beach, feeling how the pull increases as you move it through the wind window.

1-C: Body Dragging & Recovery

Your first taste of the water.

This is the most fun you can have with a kite. You’ll enter the water for the first time and let the kite pull you through the waves. This builds incredible confidence.

  • Water Entry: Getting into the water safely with the kite overhead.
  • Body Dragging: Experience the sensation of being pulled by the kite. It’s like waterskiing with your body!
  • Downwind Riding: Learn how to position your body to ride downwind.
  • Self-Rescue & Recovery: The most important safety skill. We teach you how to safely get yourself and your gear back to shore if anything goes wrong.

Kitesurfing Course Level 1 Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve never done any water sports. Is this for me?

Absolutely! Level 1 is designed for people with zero experience. If you can follow instructions and aren’t afraid of the water, you can learn to kite.

Is it safe?

Safety is our number one priority. Masters Surf School follows the strict IKO curriculum. You will learn how to control the kite’s power and how to use the safety release systems before you ever feel overwhelmed.

What if I finish Level 1?

Congratulations! You are now ready for Level 2. This is where we introduce the board and get you up for your first ride. We offer package deals if you want to book both levels together.

What should I bring?

Bring your swimwear, a towel, sunscreen (reef-safe, please!), and sunglasses. We provide the rest. A rash guard or lycra is recommended to protect your skin from the sun.
